Dr. Balakrishna Polanaidoo returns to the subject of Gastric ulcers in a view of Permitted Substances in Equestrian Events.
The Federation Equestre International (FEI) considers the care and well being of the horse to be of paramount importance. To avoid abusing of the horse under the influence of prohibited Substance Medication Control is carried out at the major FEI Events. The philosophy behind this program is to enable the horse to compete on its on merit and ability.
Winners and random test are carried out during an event. The blood or urine is then sent to the FEI's approved laboratory for analysis.
If a horse is under treatment during an event, all medication must be reported to the Veterinary Commission and then the Veterinary Commission will recommend to the President of Ground Jury whether the horse is fit to participate, depending on the medication used.
For example treatment of gastric ulcers, on welfare grounds, the 2000 FEI General Assembly allowed gastric ulcer medication during competition. This condition may occur in horses during training, competition and transport which induces a lot of stress on the horses.
The FEI recognizes the problem, in which the only alternative is to treat the horses with the medication during the competition. Factors taken in consideration to allow the medication are:
1. The problem is accurately diagnosed by endoscopy. 2. Suitable, specific medication for treating Gastric Ulcers. 3. The medication has no effect on the athletic performance.
However, it is imperative to report to the Veterinary Commission if the horse is on Gastric Ulcer treatment during a competition. The treatment should be declared using an appropriate Medication Authorization Form obtained from the event organizer.
