This competition included the dressage test, cross-country test and one round of show jumping, for the Team and Individual results.

EVENTING DRESSAGE, TEAM & INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION

28 riders representing 7 teams and one individual from Bali started the first Dressage day of the Eventing competition.

Wempy Kaunang on Sonny Boy, representing Jawa Timur, held the lead at the end of the first day where he scored 53.48 penalty points. In runner-up position, Rahmat Natsir (Kalimantan Timur) scored 53.7 with his Arthayasa bred 7-year-old gelding Kumala Rainer. Asep Lesmana on Victoria (Jawa Barat) was third with the score of 54.13.

The Kalimantan Timur Team was in the lead after Dressage with 167.39 points, for the best three of four riders, closely followed by the Jawa Barat Team with a total of 170.00. DKI Jakarta lies third with 172.39.

CROSS-COUNTRY TEST

In the competition on Saturday, September 4, supported by some 4000 spectators, twenty seven riders performed at their best on the cross-country track of the Muba Equestrian Centre. The course of 1995m consisted of 27 obstacles including 7 double combination and 2 water obstacles.

Asep Lesmana (Jawa Barat) earned 1.2 time penalties in the cross-country test to gain the leading position after the second day. Budi Tulodo (Kalimantan Timur) moved from the 8th place after the dressage test to eventual 2nd place thanks to his clear cross-country round. The third best after the cross-country was Yan Yan Hadiansyah from DKI Jakarta. Yan Yan was one of the three riders in the class to achieve a clear cross-country round.

SHOWJUMPING TEST

Swiss course designer Paul Weier had designed a challenging course with both technical and speed aspects, which produced no clear rounds for the showjumping day.

The Jawa Barat again showed promising form by convincingly winning the team competition, some 70 points ahead of the Sumatera Selatan (Team Silver). It was a great achievement with double gold for Asep Lesmana individually and with his Jawa Barat team (total 229.47 points).

DKI Jakarta’s Yan Yan Hadiansyah on Milan finished in 2nd place in the individual classification with 71.48 points and his team won the Bronze medal (442.86).

The Individual Bronze medalist of the PON XVI Eventing class was Jojo Jonathan on Forever (Jawa Barat) with 81.22 points.

Team Silver went to Sumatera Selatan team with total of 361.53 penalty points.

Hopeful Kalimantan Timur team unfortunately did not achieve any good results in the Eventing competition due to unexpected elimination of one of their four riders in the cross-country (Fesol Al Bahri on Cameo) and one in the showjumping tests (Rahmat Natsir on Reiner).

Husref Malik, Malaysian eventing rider, comments the PON eventing (Husref is based and trains in Australian and competes internationally in 3-4 star events):
“First impression of the eventing phase was great, wonderful. The cross country-course was technically challenging but inviting, in some standards it was a small one star, but very technical considering the layout of the course – it was very tight at the middle part of the course, but all the fences were professionally built with addition of some theme fences and a good use of the water complex.

Dressage test.
Dressage needs improvement as slightly more then half of the riders did not even have 50% on their dressage test. The riders lack in technical dressage riding but showed great effort and enthusiasm.

Cross-country day.
As expected it was a testing track and we had a variety of refusals and falls only due to poor riding but not horses’ ability. The local bread horses were amongst the majority of starters. They performed very well and showed great heart over some of the bigger and technical fences. The XC pulled great numbers watching the event and overall was one of the most exciting events in the competition. There is a room for improvement and a good base of riders committed to eventing. It would be not long till the level of eventing in Indonesia will improve. The country is on the right track to develop a team for the next Asian games 2006.

Show Jumping
It was it technical course, a little on the big side and to that did not contribute any clear rounds. Jumping too needs improvement and as many faults were due to riders’ errors.

To sum up it was a successful 3de and the winners were clearly better prepared. It was great for the sport in the region and great for eventing as a whole. No death of horses and no serious injuries to riders.”
