Kuala Lumpur, August 8, 2008 – The Power & Grace Short Film Competition joins the ranks of Asia’s leading filmmaking competitions. This is the first nationwide short film competition organised by Asiapromote Ventures Sdn. Bhd, a leading event manager and promoter in Malaysia.

“Following the success of the Photography Competitions we organised in conjunction with the 2006 FEI World Cup Jumping Final and the 2007 FEI 5-Star KL Grand Prix, we are extending our competition series to include other media platforms,” said Wan Zaleha Radzi, Asiapromote’s Managing Director.

“We strongly believe that this competition will serve as a catalyst to raise the profile of local talents. This is our initiative to provide recognition for these budding filmmakers and to show our support for the arts,” she added.

The competition will provide an opportunity for emerging filmmakers to show off their artistic flair, talents and creativity, and to express their views on issues close to their hearts through the lens. It is also to encourage, inspire and educate young people to create films and be exposed to real life experience of deadlines, budgets, technical and artistic aspects of filmmaking.

Entries should demonstrate the filmmaker’s interpretation of the theme Power & Grace – two powerful yet contrasting words that connote strength and gentleness. Short films could illustrate the contrast or the blending of the two extremes or to show power and strength tempered with grace and beauty or to juxtapose the two strong adjectives.

The subject matter can be powerful yet graceful or to show force and kindness. There is power and grace in life – in sports, movements, dance, speech, the arts, music, nature, animals and people. The ability to portray the contrasts or the harmonisation of two very different qualities is important.

The organiser is looking for original short films that pack a punch and entries could be documentary, docu-drama, drama or animation. The dialogue may be in any vernacular languages spoken in Malaysia but must be subtitled in English, and the running time should not exceed 20 minutes excluding credits.

Judging will be done by a panel of judges who are experts in the industry and their decision is final and binding.

The inaugural Power & Grace Short Film Competition is open to students as well as independent and amateur filmmakers who are above 18 years of age and are Malaysian citizens or residents. There is no entry fee and each entrant can submit up to a maximum of three entries. The competition closes on September 30, 2008.

The winner in the Open Category will take home a cash prize of RM10,000 while the second and third prize winners will receive RM3,000 and RM1,000 respectively. In the Student Category, the first prize is cash RM4,000, second prize RM2,000 and third, RM1,000.
